When a house runs out of room, an addition is often a better answer than moving. Gulf Remodeling builds room additions, bump-outs and second-story additions across Houston, and we manage the whole project: the design, the engineering, the permits, the foundation, the framing and the finish work.

Types of additions we build

  • Bump-outs: extend a kitchen, bathroom or bedroom a few feet without building a whole new room
  • Room additions: a new bedroom, primary suite, family room or home office on the ground floor
  • Second-story additions: build up instead of out when the lot has no room to spare
  • Primary suites with a new bathroom and closet
  • In-law and guest suites
  • Garage conversions when the space you need is already under your roof

Adding on to a Houston home

Tying a new slab into the old one

Most Houston homes sit on a concrete slab. A ground-floor addition needs its own foundation, properly tied into the existing slab so the two move together instead of cracking apart. Getting this right is the most important part of an addition in our soil, and it is work we know well from our foundation repair.

Building up on small lots

In neighborhoods like the Heights, Oak Forest, Montrose and Bellaire, lots are tight and setbacks leave little room to build out. A second story is often the only way to add real space. Before we design one, the existing foundation and framing have to be checked to confirm they can carry the new floor, and where the project needs engineering we bring in the right specialists so structure and design are planned together.

Permits, setbacks and deed restrictions

Additions always need permits, and many Houston neighborhoods also have deed restrictions on setbacks, height and materials. We confirm what your lot allows before you spend money on a design you cannot build.

Making it look like it was always there

A good addition matches the existing roofline, siding or brick, windows and trim, inside and out. We plan the transitions between old and new floors, ceilings and walls so the addition feels like part of the house.

Home additions: FAQ

Is it better to build out or build up?

It depends on your lot, your setbacks and your foundation. Building out is usually simpler when there is room; building up saves yard space on small lots. We look at both on the first visit.

Can my house support a second story?

Many can, but it has to be confirmed. The existing foundation and framing are evaluated before a second story is designed, and we bring in engineering where it is needed.

Do you handle the permits?

Yes. Additions always need permits and inspections, and we handle them as part of the project.

Can we live in the house during an addition?

Usually, yes. Most of the work happens outside the existing house until the final connection is made, and we plan that step to keep disruption short.

How do I get a quote?
