Stair-step cracks and foundation movement
Houston’s clay soil swells when it is wet and shrinks in drought. As the foundation moves, brick walls crack, often in a stair-step pattern along the mortar joints, and gaps open above windows and doors. Filling the crack without dealing with the movement means it comes back. We look at the whole picture, and our foundation repair team can address the cause when it is the foundation.
Matching mortar and brick
Fresh mortar that does not match the old stands out for years. We match the color and the joint style, and for replacement bricks we match size, color and texture as closely as possible, often using salvaged brick.
Water
Open mortar joints let water into the wall behind the brick. In our rain, that is how rot and mold start behind a brick wall that looks fine from outside. Repointing worn joints keeps water out.

Is a cracked brick wall serious?
Small hairline cracks are common. Wider cracks, stair-step cracks along the mortar, or gaps over windows and doors can point to foundation movement and should be looked at.
What is repointing?
Repointing, also called tuckpointing, means removing worn or cracked mortar from the joints and replacing it with new mortar. It keeps water out and makes the wall look sharp again.
Can you match my existing brick?
We match size, color and texture as closely as possible, often with salvaged brick, and match the mortar color and joint style.
Should I fix the foundation first?
If the cracks come from foundation movement, yes, or the cracks will return. We will tell you honestly what we see.
