Tile is only as good as what is underneath it. Gulf Remodeling installs tile in Houston homes and businesses, and we put as much care into the waterproofing, the substrate and the layout as into the tile you see.

Tile in Houston homes
Waterproofing in showers
Grout and most tile are not waterproof. In a shower, the waterproof layer behind the tile is what keeps water out of the wall. We install a proper waterproofing system over the walls and floor and detail the corners, niches and curb. In Houston humidity, this is the step that decides whether a shower lasts.
Slab movement and cracked tile
Houston slabs move with the soil, and small slab cracks show up as cracked tile and grout. For floors over a slab, we use a crack-isolation layer under the tile where it makes sense, so normal movement does not crack the finished floor.
Large-format tile
Big porcelain tiles look great but show every dip in the floor. We level the floor first and set large tiles so the edges do not catch.
Hard water
Houston’s hard water leaves scale on shower tile and grout. Tile choice, a sealed grout and a good fan make cleaning much easier. We will point out what is easiest to keep looking new.

Tile installation: FAQ
Do you waterproof showers before tiling?
Yes, always. We install a waterproofing system on shower walls and floors before any tile goes up.
Why does tile crack on Houston slabs?
Houston soil makes slabs move, and cracks in the slab can travel up into the tile. A crack-isolation layer under the tile helps prevent that.
Can you install large-format tile?
Yes. We level the floor first so large tiles sit flat and the edges line up.
Can you tile over existing tile?
Sometimes, if the existing tile is solid and the height works. In showers we usually remove it so we can waterproof properly.
